On February 25, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the imposition of a temporary nationwide Medicare moratorium on the following newly enrolling durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics, and supplies (DMEPOS) supplier types (primary or secondary):
- Medical Supply Company
- Medical Supply Company with Orthotics Personnel
- Medical Supply Company with Pedorthic Personnel
- Medical Supply Company with Prosthetics Personnel
- Medical Supply Company with Prosthetic and Orthotic Personnel
- Medical Supply Company with Registered Pharmacist
- Medical Supply Company with Respiratory Therapist

SMAs are encouraged to, as appropriate, assess the need to implement a DMEPOS provider moratorium based on the specifics of their beneficiary population and geographical jurisdictions. As this is a Medicare-imposed moratorium, implementation at the state level is at the discretion of each SMA.
